In our Bachelor of Science in Health Science program with a Concentration in Nuclear Medicine, you’ll work to gain the knowledge and technical skills to administer radiopharmaceuticals and other types of treatments. As you learn about nuclear medicine and patient care, you’ll complete hands-on experiences in clinical settings under the supervision and guidance of experienced professionals. You’ll work to learn to operate high tech equipment, interpret data, manage finance and information systems, and recognize, analyze, and monitor a range of medical conditions. You’ll also discuss healthcare administration and leadership, healthcare law and ethics, and current trends and issues in the field As a graduate, you’ll have worked to supplement your knowledge and skills in nuclear medicine to pursue advanced positions within a healthcare team, including management roles in imaging departments. You’ll also be eligible to apply to write the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) certification exam.

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Health Science with Concentration in Radiography/Nuclear Medicine is to prepare students to qualify for advanced positions within a health care team dedicated to the conservation of life and the maintenance of health, which includes prevention and treatment of disease by:

  1. Providing a quality education, both clinical and didactic, in the health sciences to prepare health professionals for advanced positions or leadership roles in accordance with professional and accreditation guidelines;
  2. Broadening a student’s knowledge, cognitive skills, and generalize theoretically learning through liberal arts and science studies;
  3. Promoting the health professions by addressing the significance of specific roles and associated professional issues;
  4. Providing competent health practitioners with educational experience beyond an associate degree level with in-depth concentrated learning experiences;
  5. Expanding and enhancing job mobility and promotion for health professionals; and,
  6. Providing the health care community with a professional competent and appropriate workforce.

Learning Outcomes

Program Goal 1
The program will provide a quality education, both clinical and didactic, in the health sciences to prepare health professionals for advanced positions or leadership roles in accordance with professional and accreditation guidelines.


The students will demonstrate clinical competence in their selected modality.

Program Goal 2

The program will graduate students who are equipped with communication skills essential for advanced and leadership roles.


  • Students will present an oral presentation in an appropriate and professional manner.

Program Goal 3

The program will introduce students to research development utilizing research activities and fundamental processes.


  • Students will demonstrate various research techniques, resources, sampling, and statistical procedures.
  • Students will acquire the skills to prepare a manuscript.

Program Goal 4

The program will meet the needs of the community by monitoring program effectiveness.

Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification/Licensure

Upon successful completion of the Certificate program requirements, the student is eligible to apply for admission to write for the certification examination of the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).  Students/graduates convicted of a misdemeanor or felony may be excluded from clinical and from sitting for certification exams.  We work diligently with all students in preparation for certification examinations.  Not all states require licensure in this area, however evidence of certification is normally required.

State licensure is currently required in AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MS, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, and WI.  All other states do not require licensure. Passing of the certification exam is required in order to apply for state licensure.  Licensure requirements may vary from state to state.  Statutory and regulatory requirements can be found at each state’s board website.

The South College Certificate in Nuclear Medicine program and the BS Health Science w/Concentration in Nuclear Medicine program offered at the Knoxville campus is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT) (820 W. Danforth Rd, #B1 Edmond, OK 73003, (405) 285-0546, In 2019, the program was awarded continued accreditation for a period of 7 years. The next review is scheduled for 2026.

What is the tuition for South College?

Tuition and fees for South College students vary by program, and tuition rates are tiered based on the number of credits taken each quarter. For example, in our undergraduate programs, students taking 10-20 credits per quarter are charged one quarterly tuition rate based on their program, while students in the same program taking 1-5 or 6-9 credits are charged different tuition rates. Our tuition rates are designed such that South College students who take a high number of credits per quarter may be able to complete their program at a lower total cost than students who take fewer credits per quarter. Does South College accept Transfer Students?

Yes! Credit for transfer work may be given if it was taken at an accredited collegiate institution, if it is equivalent to courses offered at South College, and if it carries a grade of C or better. Any coursework taken over seven years ago may be denied transfer credit if the material is outdated. Policies for the acceptance of any graduate level transfer credit are determined by the associated program faculty within guidelines determined by the institution.
