Work to develop entry-level skills in computed tomography (CT) with our Certificate in Computed Tomography program. In this program, current radiography and nuclear medicine professionals and graduates will focus on the use of CT technology to produce the best possible medical images while providing excellent patient care and avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure. To earn your certificate, you’ll take classes online and complete a hands-on clinical component in-person at a designated clinical location. By the time you graduate, you’ll have worked to be ready to use CT imaging to help with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with a wide variety of healthcare needs. You’ll also be eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Post Primary CT Certification Registry exam.

Mission

The mission of the Certificate in Computed Tomography (CT) program is to provide undergraduate students with academic and clinical foundations to competently perform as entry-level CT technologists. The curriculum represents elements that are essential in educating technologists in the post-primary practice of CT. Clinical practice experience is designed to provide patient care and assessment, competent performance of CT procedures, radiation safety and total quality management.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program of study will:

  • Competently perform CT procedures to obtain diagnostic images.
  • Provide appropriate patient care to CT patients.
  • Demonstrate ALARA principles to ensure radiation safety.
  • Communicate professionally with patients and members of the healthcare team.
  • Perform and monitor quality assurance tests.

The program will continually monitor program effectiveness through assessment and evaluation to ensure that the needs of the community are met.

Admission Requirements

General admission to South College does not guarantee admission to the Certificate in Computed Tomography (CT) program. Applicants interested in this program are required to visit the college and meet individually with an admissions representative and program faculty to ascertain if their goals can be met by the college. Prospective students declaring CT as their major must be generally admitted to South College and meet the following requirements in order to be considered for full admission to the program:

  • Meet all South College admission requirements;
  • Be a Registered Radiologic Technologist, Radiation Therapist or Nuclear Medicine Technologist (ARRT, NMTCB) in good standing;
  • OR Be a graduate of an accredited Radiography, Radiation Therapy, or Nuclear Medicine program and eligible to sit for the ARRT or NMTCB certification examination;
  • AND Successfully complete program admission requirements

The program reserves the right to offer conditional admittance. Students admitted on a conditional basis must obtain appropriate primary certification within 1 quarter of being accepted into the program.

Applicants must provide the following:

  • Completed South College application for admission and application to the Certificate of CT program.
  • Official transcripts for all undergraduate work completed.
  • Proof of certification or license.
  • $50 application fee (online payment or payment via telephone is available).

Computed Tomography Technologist Certification/Licensure

The program is designed to prepare graduates to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and/or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) post-primary Computed Tomography (CT) certification examination. We work diligently with all students in preparation for certification examinations.  Not all states require licensure in this area, however evidence of certification is normally required.

State licensure is currently required in AZ, CO, FL, MA, MI, NC, OR, TN, VT, and WI.  These requirements may vary from state to state.  Statutory and regulatory requirements can be found at each state’s board website.  Passing of the certification exam is required in order to apply for state licensure.

What is the tuition for South College?

Tuition and fees for South College students vary by program, and tuition rates are tiered based on the number of credits taken each quarter. For example, in our undergraduate programs, students taking 10-20 credits per quarter are charged one quarterly tuition rate based on their program, while students in the same program taking 1-5 or 6-9 credits are charged different tuition rates. Our tuition rates are designed such that South College students who take a high number of credits per quarter may be able to complete their program at a lower total cost than students who take fewer credits per quarter. Does South College accept Transfer Students?

Yes! Credit for transfer work may be given if it was taken at an accredited collegiate institution, if it is equivalent to courses offered at South College, and if it carries a grade of C or better. Any coursework taken over seven years ago may be denied transfer credit if the material is outdated. Policies for the acceptance of any graduate level transfer credit are determined by the associated program faculty within guidelines determined by the institution.
