Program Director

Dr. Shannon Layton is a physician assistant who has been in clinical practice since 2013. She earned her Doctor of Medical Science degree from the University of Lynchburg, along with a Master of Health Care Administration and a Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Des Moines University. She completed her undergraduate education at Indiana University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology.

Dr. Layton holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Emergency Medicine, reflecting her advanced expertise and commitment to high-quality patient care in acute settings. Her clinical background includes extensive experience in emergency medicine and trauma-focused care.

Since transitioning into academia, Dr. Layton has been dedicated to educating and mentoring future Physician Assistants. She joined the Nashville Physician Assistant Program at South College in 2022, where she has contributed to curriculum development and student success.

Dr. Layton is a native Hoosier and has returned to her home state to serve as Program Director for the Indianapolis campus, where she is committed to helping shape confident, competent, and compassionate physician assistants. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes clinical excellence, evidence-based practice, and patient-centered care.

Director of Clinical Education

Dalton Sexton, M.M.S., PA-C, serves as the Director of Clinical Education for the South College Physician Assistant Program in Indianapolis, Indiana. He joined South College in July 2025 and plays a key role in overseeing clinical training experiences, fostering preceptor relationships, and ensuring students receive high-quality, hands-on medical education.

Dalton earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana State University and completed his Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Midwestern University. With over eight years of clinical experience in primary care, he has developed a strong foundation in comprehensive, patient-centered medicine, emphasizing continuity of care and evidence-based practice.

In addition to his clinical work, Dalton has been actively involved in medical education for more than five years, serving as a dedicated preceptor and mentor to physician assistant students. He is passionate about preparing the next generation of healthcare providers and is committed to cultivating clinical competence, professionalism, and compassionate care among his students.

Dalton has also contributed to professional development initiatives by collaborating with organizations to deliver NCCPA board preparation courses for both PA students and practicing clinicians. His academic and clinical interests include advancing clinical education, strengthening preceptor engagement, and promoting high standards in patient care delivery.

Clinical Education Administrator

Kristina Furto joins the PA Program at South College Indianapolis as the Physician Assistant Clinical Education Administrator. Kristina has extensive experience in higher education and healthcare operations. Her professional background includes supporting staff, coordinating workflows, training and mentoring team members, and ensuring compliance with complex regulatory and administrative processes. She has experience focused on problem‑solving, process improvement, and cross‑department collaboration. Kristina works closely with PA students, preceptors, and clinical partners to support clinical rotations and ensure efficient, compliant clinical education processes. She is highly organized and detail‑oriented, bringing strong technical expertise to her role. Kristina is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree at South College in Information Technology with concentrations in IT Management and Cybersecurity.

Principal Faculty

Hannah Carson is a residency-trained emergency medicine PA and educator with a passion for clinical excellence and medical education. She received her Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a minor in Business Administration from the University of California, Irvine, before earning her Master’s degree at the Yale Physician Associate Program.

Since her time as an EMT in Phoenix, she has cultivated a love for emergency medicine, including completing the Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview, where she served as Chief Resident and developed advanced skills in critical care and emergency procedures. She has multiple years of clinical experience in emergency medicine, spanning from urban to community to rural hospital settings. Alongside her clinical practice, she has developed a passion for education, which led to her time serving as Adjunct Faculty at the IU PA Program and volunteering with their point-of-care ultrasound program. She is excited to continue preparing future clinicians at South College through engaging, practical, compassionate, and evidence-based learning.
