Breathing Life Into Healthcare: Spotlight on South College’s Respiratory Therapy Program
Respiratory Therapists are the unsung heroes of modern healthcare — helping patients breathe easier, recover faster, and, at times, navigate life’s most critical moments.
In Episode 16 of Live From South College, host Kathleen Stockham sat down with Michelle Abreu, Program Director for Respiratory Care and Associate Dean of Academic & Student Services at South College’s Knoxville campus, to talk about the growing importance of respiratory therapy and the students stepping into this essential role.
A Career That Spans a Lifetime
Respiratory Therapy (RT) offers professionals a rare privilege: caring for patients at every stage of life.
“We can be there for a patient’s very first breath — and sometimes for their last,” Ms. Abreu shared.
From premature infants in neonatal intensive care to adults managing chronic lung conditions, Respiratory Therapists bring expertise and compassion to moments that matter most.
Why Demand for RT Is Rising
Advances in healthcare mean patients are living longer, often with conditions that require respiratory support. Meanwhile, new challenges like vaping-related illness and the legacy of COVID-19 have increased the need for skilled therapists.
During the pandemic, RTs were thrust into the spotlight, innovating treatments and supporting patients on ventilators. That visibility has only underscored how vital the field is.
Who Thrives in Respiratory Therapy?
Ms. Abreu says the ideal student blends quick thinking, teamwork, and empathy:
– Adaptable: Vital signs can shift in seconds — therapists must stay calm and make smart decisions fast.
– Collaborative: RTs work alongside nurses, doctors, and other specialists in high-stakes settings.
– Compassionate & dependable: Patients rely on therapists not only for technical skill but for steady support.
– Eager to learn: With new devices, medications, and therapies emerging constantly, curiosity is key.
Many students are drawn to RT after witnessing a loved one’s struggle with breathing challenges — turning personal experience into professional purpose.
Myths and Missteps: Oxygen Bars vs. Medical Care
Oxygen bars may seem trendy, but Ms. Abreu cautions against confusing them with clinical therapy.
“Most provide only about 40% oxygen — far less than medical-grade levels,” she explained. “And for some conditions, like emphysema, extra oxygen can actually be dangerous.”
Her advice? Always consult a physician before trying any form of oxygen therapy.
From Bedside to Classroom: Ms. Abreu’s Journey
A passion for respiratory therapy runs in the family — her mother and aunt were both RTs. She began her own career straight out of high school, later earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees online. Now halfway through her doctorate in higher education (through South College’s own CBE platform), she’s dedicated to preparing students for impactful careers.
“As an educator, I know the knowledge I share helps students touch so many more lives in the community,” she said.
Building and Growing the Program
Drawn by South College’s innovative spirit, Ms. Abreu joined South College to launch its respiratory therapy program across multiple campuses. From designing curriculum to mentoring faculty, she’s helping ensure students have access to modern labs, cutting-edge equipment, and a supportive learning environment.
Campus tours and lab visits are available for anyone curious about RT — a great way to see the facilities and meet faculty before enrolling.
Preparing for Certification and Beyond
Respiratory therapy students at South College don’t just study; they practice, simulate, and build confidence for real-world scenarios. They complete mock board exams and attend review seminars before tackling the rigorous National Board for Respiratory Care credentialing exam.
“By the time they graduate,” Ms. Abreu says, “they have everything they need to pass and begin their careers.”
A Rewarding Path Forward
Respiratory Therapy offers stability, purpose, and the chance to make a tangible difference. For students who love science, hands-on learning, and helping others, it’s a profession where compassion meets innovation.
“Nursing may get the headlines, but RT is where you truly see the impact of every breath,” Ms. Abreu reflected.
Whether you’re just starting out or seeking a new direction, South College’s Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy is designed to provide the skills, mentorship, and confidence to succeed — and to help others breathe a little easier.
