b The program uses the CORE system of tracking, which offers the student a permanent record of procedures and patient encounters during the clinical year. Fees may include an on-boarding credentialing platform.
c Approximate cost required for credentialing. Typically done one per year, however, rotation sites may require additional checks or screens.
d Other costs are estimated based on average costs for a typical student, including the purchase of new course materials rather than used. Actual costs may vary based on student personal preferences.
e SCPE placements may be located within commuting distance of the program campus or may require travel outside the local region. Students may be assigned to placements located more than 70 miles from campus for on average 2 out of their 8 SCPE rotations depending on site availability and curricular needs.
f Transportation estimates include the use of airfare to distant clinical sites, if needed.
g Medical Supply costs are dependent on personal selection of equipment; students will have the opportunity to purchase equipment during the orientation at South College.
h There are additional costs, which vary according to personal choice, for a required service plan.
i Health insurance is required throughout the entire PA program, didactic and clinical years, many plans offer this service. Costs will vary according to the plan.
Upon successful completion of the 15-month didactic phase, students will advance to the 12-month clinical learning phase. Prior to beginning the clinical phase, students are required to submit a letter of medical clearance from their primary care provider. In addition, students must provide documentation of all required immunizations for the clinical year. Clinical sites may establish specific immunization requirements. The institution must be able to furnish immunization records to clinical sites upon request or attest that the required documentation is on file and readily available.
Clinical Year Travel & Housing Disclosure
Upon successful completion of the 15-month didactic phase, students will advance to the 12-month clinical learning phase. Prior to beginning the clinical phase, students are required to submit a letter of medical clearance from their primary care provider. In addition, students must provide documentation of all required immunizations for the clinical year. Clinical sites may establish specific immunization requirements. The institution must be able to furnish immunization records to clinical sites upon request or attest that the required documentation is on file and readily available.
The clinical year includes required Supervised Clinical Practice Experiences (SCPEs) at program-approved clinical sites. The program makes every reasonable effort to cluster Supervised Clinical Practice Experiences (SCPEs) geographically (for example, scheduling Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine rotations consecutively in the same region). When feasible, multiple students may be assigned to the same area to allow shared housing and transportation arrangements. Students are required to return to campus following each SCPE, in accordance with program requirements.
Clinical site assignments are determined by:
- Programmatic curricular requirements
- Availability of qualified clinical sites and preceptors
- Compliance with accreditation standards
- Student progression and competency needs
Although student geographic preferences may be collected, placement within a specific region or within commuting distance of the program is not guaranteed.
SCPE placements may be located within commuting distance of the program campus or may require travel outside the local region. Students may be assigned to placements located more than 60 miles from campus for on average 3 out of their 8 SCPE rotations depending on site availability and curricular needs.
Financial Responsibility
Students are responsible for all expenses associated with participation in required clinical rotations. These expenses include, but are not limited to:
- Airfare or other travel costs
- Short-term housing
- Meals and incidentals
- Local transportation or vehicle rental
- Security deposits
- Site-specific requirements
The program does not provide reimbursement or financial assistance for clinical travel or housing expenses.
Estimated Additional Clinical Costs
Costs vary significantly based on location, housing availability, seasonal demand, and transportation needs. The program cannot guarantee or precisely estimate individual expenses.
For planning purposes, estimated additional costs for one six-week travel-based SCPE rotation are:
- Short-term housing (6 weeks): $1,500–$5,250
- Airfare (round trip, when required): $200–$1,200
- Local transportation/car rental (if required): $0–$2,250
Estimated total additional cost per travel-based rotation: $1,700–$8,500
Actual costs may exceed or fall below these estimates.
