Understanding the Physician Assistant Role in Healthcare

Physician Assistants, or PAs, are healthcare professionals who work with a physician to provide medical care in a variety of specialties and clinical settings. Physician Assistants are trained to assess healthcare issues, perform physical exams, provide preventative care, counsel behavioral health issues, and diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses and injuries. There are over 100,000 practicing Physician Assistants serving in private practice, in the military and federal government, in clinics and hospitals, and overseas.

  • Will be both patient-facing and under the direct supervision of a medical doctor/licensed physician
  • Could be the primary assessment figure on the healthcare team in an emergency room setting

Exploring Roles in the Physical Therapy Field

Physical therapy is often an important part of preventive care, rehabilitation, and treatment for patients with chronic conditions, illnesses, or injuries. Physical therapists (PTs) help injured or ill people improve movement and manage pain. To do so, they create a healing and recovery plan for a patient, including estimating the time necessary for possible recovery.

Under the direction and supervision of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants (PTAs) treat patients through exercise, massage, gait and balance training, and other therapeutic interventions. They record patients’ progress and report the results of each treatment to the physical therapist.

Specific Characteristics of Nursing Roles
  • Nurses (LPN, nursing assistant, registered nurse, nurse practitioner & DNP specialist) are key members of the healthcare team and mostly a patient’s first contact.
  • The nurse will typically be the first to assess immediate status of the patient, obtain vital signs for the physician and establish a set of key criteria or preparation for the physician so that they have the complete view.
