South College Admissions

Explore The Admissions Process

When a prospective student reaches out to South College—whether through the website, a phone call, or even a walk-in visit—the very first person they meet is an admissions officer. These are the guides, motivators, educators, and often the first friendly face in a student’s new academic journey.

An admissions officer with curly hair, wearing a maroon sweater, sits at a desk discussing admissions paperwork with a student who has dark hair.

In Episode 10 of Live From South College Podcast, host Kathleen Stockham kicks off the new “Welcome Series” by sitting down with someone who knows the admissions experience inside and out: Carrie Major, Senior Vice President of Ground Enrollment.

With 15 years of admissions leadership experience and a powerful personal story rooted in service, mentorship, and student advocacy, Mrs. Major offers a behind-the-scenes look at how admissions officers shape futures—one conversation at a time.

Welcome To South College From Your Admissions Team!

“We’re Life Changers” — The Role of an Admissions Officer

Mrs. Major begins with a statement that sets the tone for the entire episode:
“Admissions officers are life changers.”

She explains that prospective students arrive with their own background, aspirations, and sometimes uncertainties. Many arrive carrying what she calls “puzzle pieces”—pieces of life experience, family considerations, previous education, employment challenges, and dreams for the future.

Admissions officers listen, assemble the pieces, identify gaps, and help the student see a clear path forward.

This isn’t a transactional conversation. It’s deeply personal.

Admissions officers:

  • Ask about a student’s goals, schedule, support system, and concerns
  • Learn background and experience with education
  • Identify potential barriers and help overcome them
  • Collaborate with financial aid, student services, and the registrar
  • Provide clarity on programs, requirements, and expectations

Above all, they build trust and help students make informed decisions about their next steps.

The First Conversation: What Students Can Expect

That first phone call isn’t just procedural—it’s the first invitation into the South College community.

Admissions officers ask:

  • What inspired you to inquire?
  • What program are you interested in?
  • What does your daily schedule look like?
  • Have you been to college before?
  • Who is your support system?

From there, students are encouraged to schedule an in-person interview and campus tour. Families, partners, parents, and even children are welcome. As Mrs. Major puts it, “It’s a family affair.”

This support system can be crucial in helping the student feel confident and informed.

A Tour That Changes Everything

Many students don’t fully grasp what South College offers until they see it.

The tour showcases:

  • Modern and well-appointed simulation labs
  • Hands-on learning environments
  • Resource centers
  • Tutoring areas
  • Active classrooms with instructors who often greet visitors

The reactions Mrs. Major sees are consistent:  students are amazed.

The facilities aren’t just modern—they’re immersive and designed to simulate real-world career environments. For many visitors who are undecided about their academic direction, the tour can spark clarity and excitement.

The First In-Person Meeting

During the admissions interview, the officer reviews all previously discussed details and digs deeper:

  • Program qualifications and requirements
  • Curriculum and course expectations
  • Application steps
  • Available student resources (tutoring, writing labs, support services)
  • The potential to meet with financial aid during the same visit

It’s a collaborative process built on honesty, transparency, and student success.

Helping Transfer Students Navigate Options

Transfer students—whether currently enrolled elsewhere or returning after a gap—follow a similar process. Admissions officers help them understand:

  • How to apply
  • What program requirements look like
  • Process for transcript evaluation for possible transfer of creditsWhen financial aid conversations should begin

South College welcomes transfer students daily, and the admissions team is fully equipped to support their transition.

A Personal Story of Service, Growth, and Opportunity

Mrs. Major’s journey to South College is one she never expected.

After 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, working in human resources and recruiting, she and her husband (a critical care medic) returned to Knoxville. Her husband wanted to attend South College after hearing about it from her brother, a graduate of the business program.

Mrs. Major attended her husband’s admissions appointment as a supportive spouse—and unexpectedly found her next career calling. The director saw her background in recruitment and invited her to join the team.

Fifteen years later, her husband is now a Pharmacist—and Mrs. Major has grown from admissions officer to Senior Vice President.

“It’s amazing how life comes full circle,” she reflects.

Leadership, Balance, and Teamwork

Mrs. Major oversees a large, multi-campus admissions operation, but she credits the team for the program’s success:

  • Experienced admissions officers
  • Dedicated directors across campus locations
  • A shared culture of collaboration and consistency

She says the work is fast-paced—but deeply fulfilling.

“When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work,” she says. “We truly believe we change lives.”

Advice to Prospective Students: What Should You Do Next?

Mrs. Major’s advice is simple:

Come meet us.

Whether you’re sure about your program or still exploring, the admissions team is ready to help you sort through options, ask the right questions, and envision your future.

You can:

  • Visit south.edu
  • Apply or inquire online
  • Call any South College campus directly
  • Walk in for a same-day appointment

Unsure of your major? A campus tour often sparks interest in programs you may not have considered.

Thinking About Becoming an Admissions Officer?

South College is always looking for people who want to make a difference.

The ideal admissions officer:

  • Holds a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
  • Has a customer service background
  • Is organized, driven, and motivated
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Believes in the power of education to change lives

Understanding the “why” behind the work, Mrs. Major says, is the key.

If She Could Do It All Again…

Mrs. Major reveals a fun insight: If she were 18 again, she’d choose physical therapy.

She loves people, loves hands-on work, and appreciates how PT transforms lives—something she’s experienced personally after years in the military.

She’d start with South College’s Physical Therapist Assistant associate degree, then continue on through bachelor’s and doctoral-level programs.

“It’s a field where you can grow, you can help others, and you get to see the impact firsthand.”

Outside the Office: Baking, Family, and Grandbabies

Despite her demanding schedule, Mrs. Major makes time for:

  • Baking (her “stress relief”—and a treat her colleagues love!)
  • Time with her four grown children
  • Time for her two grandchildren: a 10-year-old grandson and a baby granddaughter.

Family, she says, is her passion.

Closing Thoughts

This episode highlights what makes the South College admissions experience unique: the people.

Admissions officers are not just gatekeepers of information—they’re guides who inspire confidence and help students turn dreams into direction. Mrs. Major’s story, combined with her passion for helping others, offers a powerful reminder of the human side of higher education.

Whether you’re exploring programs, considering a career change, or simply curious about your options, the admissions team at South College is ready to welcome you.
