South College Spanish instructor Ruth Valle has a passion for languages. Originally from Germany, Valle earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in foreign language education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Valle sat down with us to discuss her experiences at South College and her passion for education.
South College: How long have you been teaching?
Ruth Valle: Since 1982!
SC: Where did you teach before South College?
RV: I have been teaching Spanish at Sweetwater High School for 14 years. For the last five years, I have also been teaching at South College and Hiwassee College.
SC: What attracted you to South College?
RV: I appreciate the mature attitude of the South College students. Most have experienced life outside of high school and have come to the realization that a college education is well worth the effort and expense.
SC: What makes South College unique?
RV: I am impressed with the advanced technology available to the faculty. I also appreciate the students’ serious attitudes about their studies.
SC: What’s your favorite part about teaching at South College?
RV: I enjoy teaching small classes that give each student plenty of opportunities to actively engage in my lessons.
SC: What made you decide to teach?
RV: Having grown up in Germany, I developed a genuine passion for foreign languages, and I absolutely believe that I am able to share that passion with my students. I am constantly in search of new educational technologies that can be used in the classroom. This is why I attend numerous conferences each year. I also have a passion for presenting new technologies to faculty at conferences and at South College.
