If you’re looking for a full time job or an internship opportunity, a career fair is the perfect place to look. However, showing up is not enough when you want to create a good and lasting impression with the potential employers. Not sure how to be prepared? Here are five tips you must keep in mind if you want to make the most of a career fair.
Treat it as an interview
Even though this won’t be the time to talk about your skills and your goals for the future, it is important for you to dress and act as if you were attending an interview. Remember that being nice, asking questions and looking like a professional will demonstrate how serious you are about getting hired.
Bring your resume
In order for potential employees to be able to review your experience and skills in the days following the career fair, bring several copies of your recently updates resume. If you do not have a resume or haven’t looked at it in a while, set aside some time before the fair to create or update your resume.
Know the employers
If your institution is organizing the career fair, it is likely that they will send you a list of the employers who will be attending. Before the event, make sure to do some research on the employers you might be interested in and have an idea of what they do and if they fit your needs. By doing this, it will be much easier to know who to talk to and how to prepare yourself.
Ask relevant questions
Once at the fair, make sure to talk to the employers you previously searched and let them know a little bit about yourself. Keep in mind that there are many others trying to talk to them, so keep the conversation short and ask a couple questions that demonstrate how interested you are. In addition, if you get a business card or contact information, make sure to follow up with them after the fair.
Don’t be afraid
Even though career fairs can be a little intimidating, try your best to get out of your comfort zone and introduce yourself. Remember that the best way to deal with nervousness is being prepared and practicing your networking skills as much as you can.
