As you start building a foundation for a successful career, it’s important to be a creative thinker in everything you do. You might not be an artist or a musician, but creativity is still important to your professional success. 20th century French artist Henri Matisse described creative people as curious, flexible, persistent, independent and adventurous. Take a look at how these qualities will help you succeed in your professional, personal, and college life.
1. Curiosity Brings Opportunities
Creative thinkers tend to find better opportunities in life. Even though some may say this is just good luck, the truth is that opportunities come to creative people because they look for them until they find them. This is true for your career, your personal life, and school as well! When you stay creative in every aspect of your life, you start asking yourself questions like “How can I go to school while working full time?” If you find creative answers to these questions, more opportunities will keep coming along.
2. Persistency Becomes Optimism
Part of being successful is trusting yourself and finding ways to achieve your goals. Through creativity, there are many paths that help you find the courage to be better every day. Creative thinkers tend to find ways to improve constantly by demonstrating persistence as they refuse to be brought down by obstacles. Being creative helps you power through that difficult project for a class – and do a great job.
3. Flexibility Breaks Down Barriers
A well-trained professional has great potential to advance after receiving a career-focused education and hands-on experience. However, someone that develops creative skills has greater opportunities for professional advancement. Those who are flexible find ways to apply knowledge in a different way, solving issues that seem impossible by thinking outside of the box.
4. Motivation is Personal
Self-motivation is critical to your success. However, staying motivated can be a challenge when people lack the creativity to do so. This is why asking questions like “How can I learn more about this subject?” and “How can I complete this task in a more efficient manner?” is essential to keeping motivation high. Remember that your motivation can’t depend on others and you must be independent when it comes to accomplishing your goals.
5. More Adventures and Fun
Successful professionals can – and should – still have fun. When you see every minute of your life as an adventure, find ways to enjoy the time spent working, and remember that you can’t enjoy the outcome if you don’t enjoy the process, you realize that creativity is an essential part of the equation.
Apply Your Creativity
It’s important to remember that creative thinking is beneficial to all types of students and career paths – not just the ones that seem obvious, such as art or music. For example, creative thinking is a vital aspect of careers like Thinking creatively allows you to give the specialized, unique care that each patient needs.
