1. Get Enough Sleep
Attending class early in the morning after a late night of studying takes a toll on your stress levels. When you’re overly tired, you might feel as if everything in your life is piling up on you. In order to maintain good health, it is vital to get at least seven hours of sleep each night – eight is preferred. Overall, you need sleep in order to re-energize your body and charge it up to perform to its best ability for the next day. Work on improving your sleep schedule in order to avoid the overwhelming stress you feel as a busy college student.
2. Eat a Well-Balanced Diet
By eating unhealthy foods, you are not obtaining the nutrition your body needs in order to perform to its utmost potential. An unsuitable diet can cause stress in the body and physically make you feel sluggish and tired—plus, you might put on an extra pound or two. Remember to drink your water to prevent dehydration as well! By eating balanced and healthy foods, your body will feel ready to tackle the challenges of stress.
Exercising allows your body to release endorphins, which are chemicals known to improve your mood. Endorphin production during exercise also improves your ability to sleep, which you already know helps reduce stress levels. Plus, exercising allows you to blow off some steam, which is important when you are feeling the pressure of stress.
4. Take Study Breaks
If you’re often feeling as though you need your head’s in a book 24/7, consider taking a break and setting aside time for stress reduction activities. Go outside and take a walk! Our brains are not meant to stay focused on the same subject for hours on end, so take a break every 90 minutes to let your brain recharge for further studying. Additionally, high stress levels tend to happen when students procrastinate. Consider studying each subject regularly throughout the semester instead of cramming for an exam a few days before.
5. Have Fun with Your Friends
Since there are many aspects of life that are required of you, sometimes you might feel as though having fun with your friends is a want instead of a need. Whether it’s a movie or a night out on the town, allow yourself to take a break from the stress and have some fun.
