Laura Fitzpatrick, Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Laura Fitzpatrick graduated from the South College Nursing program about two and a half years ago. Laura was a non-traditional student, working around 40 hours a week during her prerequisites and 25 hours while in the nursing program to support her children.
Laura is currently living a dream of hers as a traveling nurse. Before coming to South College, Laura worked as an LPN in a pediatrician’s office for 17 years, and prior to that, she was a phlebotomist and lab tech for the National Guard.
“I chose South College on the recommendation of a friend. Plus, I liked that South College had smaller classes and the class schedule worked with my work schedule,” said Laura. “I had a great experience at South College. I did all of my prerequisites there as well as the nursing program. The faculty for the nursing program made it tough – and I mean that in a good way.”
Laura truly enjoyed the small class sizes, as well as the teachers who pushed her to reach her fullest potential and prepare her for her future.
“We were challenged to do our best, and they settled for nothing less. They knew what we were capable of.”
After graduation, Laura fielded many offers but chose a position in the ER.
“After I graduated, I had been offered a job to stay in Knoxville but chose to not accept. Instead, I moved to Louisville, KY where I accepted a position in one of the ERs there.”
Laura also provided some advice for people thinking about attending college, but unsure if they can manage it.
“My advice for others is don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Don’t think you can’t afford to go back to school. Don’t think you are too old to go back to school. Jump in and do it,” she said. “I’m a single parent, and I had to provide for my kids. It was hard, but I did it. It can be done through lots of hard work, frustration, tears, laughter and new friendships. Don’t ever let anyone dull your sparkle!”
Laura was also successful throughout her academic career at South College. She was the class salutatorian despite her being the second oldest person in her class – she graduated at the age of 47.
Laura’s the perfect example of how South College can help people achieve their dreams through flexible and insightful academic programs. If this story has inspired you to come back to college or if you would like to learn more, contact us today at (865) 251-1800.
