Audrey Sherles, Doctor of Physical Therapy

Meet South College student Audrey Sherles! She is currently in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Audrey Sherles is a current South College student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. After she completes the program, she’s planning to pursue residency training to become an orthopedic specialist. We asked Audrey a few questions to learn about her journey to South College and what it took to get here.

What program are you in, and why did you choose that program?
I’m in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and chose this so I could be a hands-on healthcare provider and hopefully bring meaning back to people’s lives.

Did you come to South College after working, raising a family, etc? Or did you come straight out of high school? Describe that journey.
Before South College, I attended Kentucky State University and was initially unsure about where I wanted to take my academic career after undergrad. I eventually made a plan and graduated with my bachelor’s degree, and had about six months of downtime before starting the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at South College.

Why did you choose South College?
While I was looking at programs, South College’s DPT program had a unique atmosphere and was a program that was challenging the traditional brick and mortar DPT education model. It was something I wanted to be a part of, and I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from the top PTs and educators in the country.

What is your favorite part of your studies at South College?
My favorite part is how interactive, helpful, and fun the faculty are. We have built individual relationships with them, and they have been able to learn who we are and incorporate that into the way they teach us. During labs, we spend hours learning from faculty members who are extremely excited to be there for us and to be helping us along this journey.

What is your goal after you graduate?
After I graduate, I will be pursuing residency training to become an orthopedic specialist. Eventually, I would like to provide care in underprivileged areas around the country and travel outside of the country doing mission work as well. Alongside those goals, I would like to make it back to South College and be a part of the DPT program in the future.

Do you have any advice for future students who might be in your same position?
Utilize your resources! The faculty, students, and literature that you are exposed to will help you become a successful professional and shape you into an extraordinary PT. That is what they are there for. However, if you don’t utilize these resources, communicate, or reach out to them when you need guidance, then the journey may be a little bumpy. The most important advice of all, I think, is to have fun and really enjoy this opportunity!
