School of Business Faculty Member Sharon Moore has been with South College for almost 29 years. The Knoxville native earned her undergraduate degree in business from Carson-Newman University and her master’s in adult and technological education from the University of Tennessee. Moore sat down with us and discussed her 29-year career with South College and what’s unique about the faculty and students.
South College: Where did you work before South College?
Sharon Moore: Before coming to South College, I worked at the University of Tennessee in the controller’s office. I also taught some adult education classes connected with the Knox County Board of Education.
SC: What attracted you to South College?
SM: In all honesty, I was bored with my job at UT, which resulted in a more diligent search for a new position. In the mid-1980s, high school business teaching jobs were very hard to find so I began to look into small colleges. I contacted a local small proprietor college named Cooper Institute, which also owned Knoxville Business College (now South College). I was offered a teaching position, and I have remained with South College ever since. Over the years, I have watched the student body, as well as the school, transform into an outstanding educational institution.
SC: What makes South College unique?
SM: I think the student body is what makes South College so unique. I continue to be amazed at the dedication and the commitment that the students possess as they study to advance themselves. Most of them are non-traditional students, so they have many other obligations other than just attending school. Most of the SC students have full-time jobs and families. However, it is not just the students’ desires to further their own careers that impress me – it is the support and encouragement the students offer each other. So often I see students working together and helping each other for no other reason than just because they can. I believe that is very unique and special. However, I would be remiss if I did not state that the faculty/staff is also unique and special. We all work very well together, and I believe that is because we, too, are willing to help and assist each other.
SC: What’s your favorite part about working at South College?
SM: Again, I would say that my favorite part of working at South College is the student body. I have enjoyed getting to know the students and, over the years, I have learned so much about how to handle the “ups and downs” of life. I also appreciate the academic freedom that we are allowed to have in the classroom.
SC: What makes the business program special?
SM: I think that the professors are what make the business program so special. Because South College employs both full-time and adjunct instructors, each program is able to combine up-to-date, real-world knowledge with the most useful classroom instructional methods in order to offer a well-rounded academic experience for the students. As already stated, the faculty works very well with each other and therefore both venues are able to share and learn from the other.
SC: What made you decide to teach?
SM: This is an interesting question. When I was in undergraduate school, I thought I wanted to be an accountant, so I entered the business program at Carson-Newman. It was my mother who encouraged me to also pursue an educational concentration. As I progressed through the business program and the educational program, I found myself more drawn to my education classes. During the time period, I was in undergraduate school, part of the requirements for the State of Tennessee certification was student teaching. I had a wonderful student teaching experience and fully enjoyed both teaching and preparing the lessons. I found that I became excited when I saw the class begin to understand each concept. That enjoyment continues today – I am equally excited (maybe more so) when I hear from a former student stating that something they learned in my class is helping them in the workplace.
