Do you think that you are fully prepared for your next job interview? Have you prepared for the list of standard job interview questions with no expectations of anything out of the ordinary? Well get ready for a curve ball, because that is exactly what some employers are going to throw you. A recent survey found that two out of five job seekers were asked a ‘weird’ question during their interview.
Here are some unusual interview questions that top companies have asked:
“Who is your favorite Disney Princess?”
“Describe the color yellow to someone who is blind.”
“What did you have for breakfast?”
“Who would win in a fight, Batman or Spiderman?”
“What is your favorite 90s jam?”
“How many cows are in Canada?”
“If you were an inanimate object, what would you be?”
These questions may seem random to you, but they are in no way random to the interviewer. More and more companies are realizing that “name your strengths and weaknesses” is not the way to gain true insight to a candidate’s potential for success in their organization. Discovering more about what makes a person tick and how they can think outside the box is much more telling. These kinds of questions will reveal a lot about your abilities and personality.
Just because these questions are off the wall and seemingly random doesn’t mean there is no way to prepare for them. When presented with an unusual question take time to think about it and why they would be asking something like this. How can you relate this to the company or the role that you are interviewing for? Is the question designed to discover personality, creativity, skill or ability? Taking time to filter the question in this way is important and will be recognized by the interviewer.
In your answers to these questions think about how you can exemplify traits that are important for the position you are applying for. How can you demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness or innovation and rationale?
Another reason employers may ask these unusual questions are to see how well you think on your feet. In these situations the best thing you can do is be yourself. Your answer does not have to be amazingly witty or brilliant, it just has to be composed and honest. If you cannot come up with anything to say, ask if you can come back to the question later. You may loose some of the “thinking on your feet” points, but you will gain “handling a tough situation resourcefully” points.
So, if you are faced with a weird interview question in the future here’s what we recommend: Don’t panic or stare at the interviewer with a deer-in-the-headlights look. Take a deep breath. Read the feel of the question. If it was humorous, incorporate humor into your response. Be yourself, show your personality and relate it back to the job if you can.
