The American Association of State Colleges and Universities says, “Looking at the demographics of today’s student body, nontraditional is the new traditional.” Is that true? Are adult students not as rare as we think? Whether you are a traditional or nontraditional student, we think you will be pleasantly surprised at the growing diversity among the college population.
What are nontraditional students?
The term “nontraditional student” describes a student who delayed enrollment, attends college part-time, has a full-time job, is taking care of a family or is just an adult learner. For years, nontraditional students made up a lesser portion of the college enrollment population, but in recent years, studies have found that nontraditional students make up as much, if not more, of the student body than traditional students.
Are numbers growing in favor of nontraditional students?
Yes! The number of nontraditional students at colleges and universities across the United States has grown over the years. However, one of the largest increases regarding nontraditional students has been in colleges’ awareness. Institutions are doing a better job recognizing life outside of school and the obligations adult learners have besides classwork. Students who work full-time and raise a family are more prevalent than ever before.
How do institutions accommodate nontraditional students?
Unfortunately, many big colleges and universities are still catering their programs and academic preparation toward traditional students, despite the growing nontraditional student population. Unlike South College, not all institutions take factors such as age, work and family into consideration when designing their programs.
South College implements policies and curriculums that help nontraditional students manage academic and nonacademic challenges. One approach we take is customizing our programs to fit nontraditional students’ teaching styles with in-demand skills, online classes and flexible schedules. We also provide resources like the career services office and tutoring services to help nontraditional students balance school with personal life.
Just remember, it’s never too late to go back to school! Rest assured, you won’t be the only nontraditional student at South College. Contact our admissions office today!
