Something we are proud of here at South College is our small class sizes. Our student to faculty ratio is designed so that we are able to treat our students as people, not numbers. This isn’t something that happens by accident, this is intentional and executed for the success of our students. Why is this so important? Here are just a few of the ways we think keeping class sizes small contributes to student success.
A lower number of students in our classes allows for an environment that is more conducive to the hands-on learning process. Students are able, through unique laboratory and professional settings, to engage and interact with the content of the course curriculum. The smaller classroom setting supports this endeavor as activities can be monitored and guided by the professor more thoroughly with a reduced number of students.
Opportunity for Discussion
Discourse is a key part of the learning process. When you participate in a class discussion, you are forced to synthesize your ideas and respond to others. The process of rephrasing concepts in your own words is a key component in the retention of information. A class with twelve people, versus 100, can allow a more natural discussion between students and faculty, making students more comfortable participating in class. The students will all have the opportunity to contribute to the exchange of ideas and the development of a more thorough understanding of material.
An invaluable aspect of a smaller class size is how instructors are empowered to spend more time getting to know individual students. Every student is unique, be it their life phase, their learning style, their strengths or their weaknesses. Through a more one-on-one teaching style, professors can cater to the individual student’s needs, enhancing the quality of their education. Not to mention, we think it is important for students to build a strong relationship with their instructors. This one-on-one time during class (or office hours) is a great place to start.
At the end of the day, we think it is important for our students to come away knowing they are valued and part of the South College family.
