It’s no secret that attending class is crucial to being successful in college. However, the only way to retain all the information and fully understand it when studying is to take clear and relevant notes. In order to get higher grades and have a better understanding of your class content, follow these five tips and improve your note taking skills.
1. Hand Written vs. Typed
Nowadays, a lot of teachers allow their students to take notes on their laptops. Some studies have revealed that taking notes by hand is more effective than typing notes, but this ultimately comes down to personal preference. Laptops can be more distracting, but handwritten notes might be hard to read. Do some experimenting to see which works best for you. You also might find that typed notes are better in some classes and hand-written notes are better in others.
2. Be alert
When taking notes, it is not necessary to write everything the teacher says. However, the only way to know what is important enough to be written is staying alert. If you are sitting in class and thinking about something else, you might miss something important.
3. Be systematic
Having a system will help you organize your notes later. Whether you decide to do bullet points, add notes to your power point slides or have different symbols to demonstrate emphasis, be constant in all your classes. Through this, your brain will become accustomed to a certain style and you will be able to recognize what is important.
4. Use your own words
If your teacher explains a term or gives an example, use your own words to write it down. No one knows your mind better than yourself and it will be much easier to reread your notes if you use simple words that can be understandable.
5. Review at the end of class
At the end of class, review your notes, complete whatever you are missing and highlight what you remember to be important. At this point, the information is still fresh on your mind and it will be easier to realize if you missed something.
