Whether you are currently job searching or in the middle of pursuing a degree, you are making professional impressions on everyone you come in contact with. It’s important to put your best foot forward wherever you are. When you are at work, an internship or interacting with professionals on campus, leave these five phrases behind because they have no place in a professional environment.
“That’s not fair.”
Commenting on the fairness of a decision already made is a waste of time. The time you spend complaining should be spent learning why you didn’t get what you wanted, reevaluating and taking steps to implement changes that will produce different results next time.
“That’s not my problem.”
Do you work for or with the person who is having the problem? Then it is your problem. Don’t shift blame and don’t run from an opportunity to problem solve. Instead, take action and be a part of the solution!
“That’s how it’s always been done.”
Resistance to change is a huge red flag when organizations are looking at potential leaders. You don’t want to be known for sticking with the status quo, you want to be known for optimizing and making things better every chance you get.
“There’s nothing I can do.”
Passivity and apathy have no place in the professional world. If your hands are truly tied in a certain situation, then find an alternative way to avoid dismissing the problem. If something has been asked of you and there is no way you can make it happen, discuss a scenario where the best possible outcome is achieved.
“I am too busy.”
You and everyone else. Being busy is not an excuse. You have to make time and prioritize what matters to you. Saying something like, “I am unable to prioritize that at this time. Let me see when that can be taken on.” That’s an honest answer because it describes the situation more accurately and it helps you come to a solution.
