You did it! You just graduated college — but now what? If you are feeling unsure about what’s next, don’t fret. The key is to stay calm and follow these four tips for recent grads.
Tip 1 – Set goals: long-term and short-term
Once you cross “graduating college” off your list of goals, it’s time to sit down and set new ones. Landing a job is usually most graduates’ short-term goal, but after you achieve that, it can be quite hard to determine what you want or where you want to be in the next few years. When formulating long-term goals, you should take time to reflect on what you are trying to accomplish in life. Everyone has different aspirations – maybe you want to own a home in a few years, travel the world or move across country. Whatever you want, you can achieve with planning and determination. Set your goals and go after them because nothing is better than fulfilling what you set out for!
Tip 2 – Be financially responsible
Money: this is a topic that sometimes is hard to talk about. You should try to learn as much as possible about saving money, investing money and budgeting while in college and right after you graduate. There are numerous resources on the internet, as well apps to help with budgeting and saving money. Set some time aside each month to do your finances and project the month ahead so you can stay within your means of living. Planning ahead and being responsible will minimize the stress and maximize the fun.
Tip 3 – Begin networking
You’ve most likely established some sort of network throughout your college career, but after you graduate it’s time to grow your social circle. Facebook and LinkedIn are great platforms for networking. LinkedIn was established for the purpose of professionals to associate with one another. If you haven’t created a LinkedIn account, you should, it’s the perfect way to connect with potential employers and for people to see your work history and experience. Also, be aware of networking events in your community, many groups exist like Young Professionals, as well as industry-specific conferences and meet-ups. Take advantage of all the networking opportunities you can, you never know what could come out of it!
Tip 4 – Don’t stop learning
Even after you graduate, the learning never stops. When you begin your career, in whatever field it may be, you will quickly realize that things change on a constant basis. To be on top of things and excel, you want to be continuously learning new technologies, techniques or anything that will help you stand out. Do some research, find a reliable thought leader that publishes interesting content about your career and ultimately, stay on top of things so you aren’t left behind.
Hopefully these tips will help you excel in your recent graduate life. Don’t worry or stress too much, graduating college is an exciting accomplishment and there’s so much to look forward to.
