Message from the Dean
Welcome and thank you for visiting the South College School of Pharmacy website. The School of Pharmacy offers a unique, 3-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum, and is the only accelerated PharmD program in Tennessee.
Completing the PharmD degree in 3 years offers many advantages; for example, you could complete both the degree and a postgraduate year one (PGY1) residency in a total of 4 years. Or you may choose to use the year after completing the PharmD degree to work towards a Masters or Doctoral degree. Online Master’s degree programs designed to be completed in one year make it possible to earn both a PharmD and Master’s degree in a total of 4 years. Be sure to explore how a 3-year PharmD curriculum allows you to pursue your postgraduate goals while also practicing as a pharmacist.
Through this 3-year curriculum we achieve our Mission to “prepare pharmacy students to be proficient practitioners who deliver team-oriented, patient care with advocacy and compassion to diverse populations.” The curriculum is enriched with a variety of associated activities to achieve the Mission, including initiatives in personal and professional growth and development of student pharmacists. Preparing student pharmacists to participate in team-oriented care is achieved through experiences in interprofessional education, including on-campus simulation laboratory experiences with physician assistant and nursing students. The School of Pharmacy enjoys a diverse student body that contributes to understanding the needs of diverse populations.
The School of Pharmacy is equipped with state-of-the-art classrooms and teaching and research laboratories, all of which have advanced instructional technology tools. Our faculty members are nationally recognized experts in teaching, research, and pharmacy practice, and they are supported in their work by a talented group of professional staff. Also supporting our success in the Knoxville area are high quality healthcare institutions and pharmacies where students learn alongside dedicated healthcare professionals during introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences.
Exciting student programs await you at the School of Pharmacy. Professional and social organizations provide opportunities for peer support and networking. The Pharmacy Academic Support Service (PASS) program provides you a wide range of services, including academic coaching on study skills, test-taking skills, test prep skills, time management, and test anxiety.
Our website is designed to provide current information about the School of Pharmacy and we welcome telephone or email communication for additional information. I personally invite you to schedule a tour of the School of Pharmacy and its state-of-the-art instructional facilities. We look forward to hearing how we may be of assistance to you.
Best wishes as you embark upon your journey to becoming a pharmacist!
